Shrub Appeal
Informal Balance for New Construction
The homeowner of this fabulous newly constructed home wanted colorful landscaping between their entry walk and porch. They were looking for something more interesting than spaced out boring green bushes.
The trick with this design was creating balance without strict symmetry. The design was inspired by Japanese gardens which balance nature's imperfections for a perfectly harmonious look.
Prepping the site is a very important part of creating successful and long lasting landscaping. The limestone gravel left over from new construction, near driveways, and under foundations is chemically active. Over the course of a few years it will change the pH of the surrounding soil and kill any plants that don't like a high pH (most evergreens and shrubs!).
